Pilot Program!

Special Needs Soccer, a national effort to develop a free soccer program for challenged children, will debut their new curriculum in Port Washington, New York this summer before being released nationwide. The concept behind the effort is to develop a comprehensive Special Needs Soccer Program for communities across the United States to use as a blueprint in order to launch their own initiatives. The Special Needs Soccer Package will have everything a community organization would need to provide a complete program for the challenged youth of their locale.

The Special Needs Soccer curriculum was developed over the last year by Port Washington resident Dan Brotman with a select number of physical and occupational therapists, and certified soccer trainers. Special needs soccer organizers from all over the country also supplied their expertise in an outpouring of support after finding out about the endeavor from the Pepsi Refresh Project, the SpecialNeedsSoccer.com website and social media.

The pilot program will begin on July 18, 2012 and run for an hour every week through August. The program is filling up fast, but a select number of spots are still available for children between the ages of 5 and 13. If you’re the parent of a special needs child who would like to participate in the pilot program before it expands in the Fall, then contact us at your earliest convenience. Dedicated, high-school-aged children who are interested in volunteering their time can also contact Port Washington Soccer to learn more about the program specific to Port.

“What a program like this boils down to is people looking to make a difference for individuals who face unique life challenges,” acknowledges Dan Brotman, Founder of Special Needs Soccer. “I couldn’t have done this without the help of all the people who came forward from all over the county to supply their expertise and experience.”

Although, there will be some competitive aspects, readying the participants for team competition will not be the emphasis, unlike other special needs soccer organizations. The curriculum will address the basic physical, mental, technical and tactics of the game while building a link between a community’s typical and special kids.

We have set up a dedicated special needs soccer website for Port Washington, which will contain all the necessary information about registration for the Fall program. Please visit Port Washington Soccer for all the latest Special Needs Soccer information as it relates to this specific locale.
